Driving in India is certainly fun, tiring and challenging(esp if you are driving a car). There are two sides of this post. The Funnier side and the serious side..Lemme try to touch base on both the ends of the spectrum..
I've few funny experiences while driving...
on fine busy day(as ever) on road, I was following The tail lights of few other cars...I was travelling at about 45 kmph and there was a van behind me who kept honking..Initially I thought I could change lane(I know there is some oen asking me..is there something called lane in Chennai) and let him follow The cars that I was following...But I got frustrated when The honking persisted and decided not to pave him way. Now, when I stopped at a signal, The van came besides me. I was prepared to shout at him and lowered my window..The van driver shouted..caar பார்க் பண்ணிட்டு நடந்து போக வேண்டியது தானே... I din want to give a shoit back and said.... நீ எல்லா வண்டியும் தாண்டி பறந்து போக வேண்டியதுதானே !!! I generally resist talking like this on road..But still wondering what made me talk like this...
On the serious side..I wonder why people do the following
1. Honk even when the signal is red..I generally don't tend to give way...I at times wonder am i doing the right thing...
2. Change so called lanes hilariously
3. Go in One-way
I always find it difficult to digest such things...that has been my nature from the day I started driving two-wheelers.........
Still wondering as how thse people could be educated on road sense....

good post!i dont drive..(if u read my license post..u ll come to know;-))...but have heard from rajendra...In pune,,nobody cares for traffic signals..so it is havoc on roads...but in mumbai ,public obey traffic signals sincerely...but anyway take 1 and half hours to reach destination..

I can't agree with you more on the driving nightmare in India..If I start reasoning behind their haphazard driving practices, I can understand why they drive that way..
1. A lot of Indians are always in a hurry...trying to catch the next mile without even knowing what they would be doing when they reach the next milestone! I blame this behavior on the population of cities. Same behavior can be seen in overcrowded cities in the US as well..but in a little more civilized way
2. Pressure - family, work, and social..who knows what the drivers are going through most of the time.
3. Driving in one way - hmmm..i am not sure how one can do that..unless they have not seen the one-way sign! By driving in one-way..that person is not booking a single ticket upstairs..in fact booking a double berth along with the person coming in the right way!

same experience for me once after learning driving i took a tial drive to singanallur .ravi was with me one boy in cycle chased me and overtook me. again he did.and kevalama enna parthan.ravi paavam.now i am well versed in driving but i dont drive more than 40-50 kmph.people used to over take me and see me as a insect.some times perisu paatu po.but i never violate road rules thanks to my us experience i got fine once for wrong parking and once in variety hall road in one way but there was no board. i told police there is no board somebody has pasted some notice on it .police just fined 100 rs.the tempo drivers minidoor drivers all drive recklessly
